After being in Austin for just a few months, state Rep. Randy Weber, R-Pearland was named to two House of Representative committees Thursday.
House Speaker Joe Straus, R-San Antonio, released the assignments and named Weber to the public education committee and to the environmental regulation committee.
State Rep. Dennis Bonnen, R-Angleton, who had chaired the environmental regulation committee in past sessions, was named chair of the land and resource management committee and a member of the elections committee.
Bonnen was not available for comment Thursday.
The elections committee oversees bills related to the Texas election code and reviews bills related to the elections division of the Texas secretary of state’s office.
The land and resource management committee will review bills relating to use of public lands, eminent domain and the general land office.
Weber said he wanted to be on the public education committee to exact change in the way schools are funded so taxpayers are not overburdened and schools have the funding they need.
“I’m extremely pleased with that,” Weber said of the appointment.
A lot of school districts in Texas including in Brazoria County, say they are facing deficit budgets and more districts could be affected if legislators don’t change the school funding mechanism.
Weber said he doesn’t yet know what to do but he does want a seat at the table to help solve the problem.
“There’s something that needs to be done about public school funding,” he said. “I wish I had the answer.”
Aside from bills related to public education funding and school standards, the committee also has oversight of the State Board of Education and the Texas Education Agency.
The environmental regulation committee has oversight on bills relating to air, land and water pollution, regulation of industrial development impact on the environment as well as the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
Weber said he was glad to get a seat on that committee as well because he wants to have a say in how environmental regulations are written.
